About the Art
My work is centered around my life as an Indigenous woman living in an urban world and practicing traditions passed down from my ancestors. I work digitally most of the time but my favorite medium is simply pen and sharpie. I have worked in paint such as gouache and use acrylic paint while at my part time job. I am a very humorous person and love capturing Native humor and slang in my pieces. I started integrating my heritage in my work when I realized that every race and walk of life is represented in art and media, except Indigenous people. We seem to be swept under the rug of representation and I was tired of it.
About the Artist
Alyssa Adrinne Masaquaptewa (aka Aly) is a member of the Hopi Tribe from the village of Old Oraibi and belongs to the Greasewood clan. She is a 20 year old self-taught digital artist who grew up watching her grandfather, Anthony Honahnie, create traditional Hopi art. She currently works as a painting instructor at a local paint-and-sip studio, reigniting people’s love for painting. Her style is centered around creating a bridge between her urban life and traditional life. A dream of hers is to tell Indigenous stories while working in the film industry.
