About the Art
This instrumentally-based project addresses the undertones of white supremacy in the archeological field, in connection to Indigenous archeological finds. Many scientists and archeologists have for years insisted that Indigenous mummies, such as the Kennewick Man of Washington and the Spirit Cave Mummy of Nevada, are actually Caucasian. DNA evidence has since refuted these claims. However, many white people still believe in the archeological Solutrean Theory, which purports that the ancient French sailed the Atlantic and inhabited North America before any other group. Much of the ‘evidence’ presented with this theory has been disproven. I want to spread awareness of this common ordeal for Indigenous Americans—colonizers stealing even their ancestral lineage. The news segment I sample is about the Spirit Cave Mummy, a Paiute-Shoshone mummy dated to be about 10,000 years old. The melodies and instrumentals following the sampled news excerpt express my pride to have ancestors who were here before colonization. These melodies also express my anger from living in a colonized world surrounded by people who try to justify their white ancestors’ actions while downplaying their destructive impact on Indigenous tribes today.
