About the Art
Our ways have never been alternative, they are bound to our origin. Through our motion, movement and fluidity we remain afloat. Our genealogies are embedded in this essence. Flowing from the sacred waters of remembrance into the chalice of belief. An outpouring without measure, overflowing with an unwavering willingness to be free.
Special thanks to my amazing partner Haydeé Lavariega for supporting me through this process in so many ways, including filming, photographing and loving me. Huge shoutout to my talented uncle Tysean McCullough and his company Upper Northwest Customs for the beautiful Juneteenth garment.
About the Artist
Mu Knowles is a Black trans non-binary queer liberation steward as well as an Afro-Indigenous Futurist. As an artist they express themselves through various mediums including music, poetry, spoken word, storytelling, urban agriculture & land stewardship, film making, scholarly writing and photography. Born and raised in the historically Black Hilltop Neighborhood on Puyallup Tribal Territory, they have focused their energy and efforts on co-creating and crafting an environment and community that is grounded in sustainable, intentional, fluid, responsive and inclusive practices and ways of being. Over the last thirteen years they have delved into power building and movement making. Their energy work has been closely tied to the fostering of a world where Black Liberation, Indigenous Sovereignty, Immigration Justice, Trans & Queer Liberation, community care, food justice, housing & land justice, economic justice, food sovereignty and mutual aid are actualized and brought to fruition.
