yəhaw̓ Indigenous Creatives Collective partnered with Seattle Indian Health Board for their 2022 Indigenous People Festival, June 11th, 11am-6pm, in person at Seattle Center’s Armory. The annual festival provided a venue for Native people to celebrate their unique cultures through song, dance, performances, art, food, and the sharing of Indigenous knowledge. The yəhaw̓ collective hosted a live screen printing activity, and a special exhibition featuring local Afro-Indigenous creatives. This event was free and open to the public. We screen printed more than 100 free tote bags and paper prints, and gave away over 300 posters throughout the day.

Sovereign Exhibition

The pop-up show Sovereign, featured intergenerational Afro-Indigenous creatives from across Washington, including Brit Reed, Christina Pettibon, Kellen Trenal, Miriam Zmiewski-Angelova, Paige Pettibon, and Soren Lake.

Showcasing beadwork, digital design, and a wide range of materials, this exhibition highlighted artworks that honored kin and community relationships. Each artist uniquely explored the intersections of their ancestral inheritance and personal power, crafting a sovereign sense of self through their art.

Live Screen Printing

We know that Black liberation and Indigenous sovereignty are interconnected. Visitors showed their support by getting shirts, bags, flags, and more printed with powerful designs by Paige Pettibon, and Amber Starks aka Melanin Mvskoke. yəhaw̓ provided paper and tote bags, and visitors also brought their own gear to have custom printed on site by our expert printmaker Alex Schelhammer of POLYREV.
