During his residency, Owen proposed creating a site-responsive project that amplifies the yəhaw̓ land through the lens of Salish and Chinook knowledge systems, wellness practices, language, and historical context. Envisioning what kinship with the land can mean in the modern context of Seattle.
Visiting during sunrise and staying until sunset, Owen spent hours on the land and wove together stories of the history, his own personal memories, and traditional tales and language into an essay that brought it all to life. The presentation was funny, heartwarming, educational, and poetic. Being on the land and hearing his words was truly a beautiful experience. Right down the crows cawing and flying overhead when they heard their names spoken.
